Nokian Tyres Fastest on Ice: New Nokian Hakkapeliitta 8 sets New World Record 335.713 km/h!

Same place, car and driver as before but new Nokian Hakkapeliitta 8. Nokian Tyres' own "Iceman", test driver Janne Laitinen drove at a speed of 335.713 kilometres per hour (208.602 mph) on the ice of the Gulf of Bothnia in freezing winter weather.

Grip and speed like never before were ensured by the new spearhead product for the world's leading manufacturer of winter tyres -- the Nokian Hakkapeliitta 8 studded tyre (255/35R20 97 T XL).

The car driven in this exceptional test was an Audi RS6. The new world record was achieved on 9 March near the city of Oulu in Finland, on an 12-kilometre (7.5 mile) track created on the ice of the Gulf of Bothnia.

- Relentless testing at the extreme limits always works to serve the interests of the consumer. We wanted to set an extremely tough challenge for the new Hakkapeliitta 8. At extreme speeds, the forces focused on the tyres are enormous, as the car travels over 93 metres per second and the studs hit the ice 43 times. As the air resistance increases, we need even more grip to accelerate the car. In addition to grip, handling and stability are also essential, says Matti Morri, Technical Customer Service Manager for Nokian Tyres.

For those who think Nokian should better demonstrate their tyres performance with stopping and cornering tests, should first realize that all these tests; (including top-speed) test grip strength.

Top speed on a surface is an excellent way to prove tyre grip quality and I'll explain why.

-For every unit of speed a car travels faster, the force of the static air acting against the front of the car becomes greater.
-In order for a car to accelerate, a force greater than the resisting drag forces must be applied in the direction of travel.
-Since the only place a car is able to direct its engine power is at the contact points of the tyres, having better grip is the only way to improve the amount of forward force possible out of a given vehicle on a given surface.

Summary: More grip is needed for more top speed.

Of course there are slight differences that separate speed, cornering, and braking tests from each other. (such as wheel lockups during braking that simply won't happen on an acceleration test. Or suspension nuances in a cornering test)  But the tests are not different enough for the results to be largely dictated by anything other than grip. Then, there are other factors that enhance the idea of proving grip strength with speed. Like the fact that: as speed increases, tyre contact area decreases. Making it even more difficult to extract the engine's force through the tyres at high speeds.

In conclusion: not only is the grip proven by this top speed test, it is much more interesting and awe-inspiring to see a team and their car exceed a speed barrier; than it is to watch them grind to a stop.

Audi и Nokian молодцы! Первые за качественный а/м, а вторые за качественные шины.
Удивительно как зимние шины выдержали такую скорость.

thats all good & I agree that Nokian are brilliant (having used them myself) but normally the issue is stopping not going in a straight line.

Why 255/35R20 HAKKA8 rated as T (190km/h), not even H(210)? How fast can i actually drive on them? Will not they explode if i extend speed rating MUCH?

Now there's more grip on snow. Also, there's rain and summer tires.
