think of it in terms of money. if you have 2 accounts in which you owe 20 $ each, then you'll "own" -40 $ in the bank.
But if you ARE the bank then there are "-2 accounts" with -20$ each, so you "own" 40$. Don't know if that helps you, some people have difficulty imagining -2 accounts, but I look at it in a sense of directionality.

There's a limited number of molecules in the universe, so for anyone to gain anything physically someone or something else has to loose the exact same amount.
