I Agree with you when it comes to Zubimendi or Guimares over Merino if we are still trying to play the same way as last season. Zubi and Bruno both would fit in the Jorginho role, however, I belive with this type of signing we are looking for a new tactical switch as we have had every year. Maybe we don’t want to attack the way we are used to on the left side. With Califiori and Merino most likely coming in the left side is getting more and more interesting and a different style from the two previous season’s. I trust that Arteta is making a Genius move yet again and we take the stretch this time and bring the premier league to the Emirates.

I will start by saying that Zubimendi is the better signing for me, but doesnt seem like we getting him.

I see Merino more as a rotation option for Rice. Able to deputise for Declan as the six or ball winner, with more ball carriers around him in midfield.

Merino also can play as that LCM in our starting midfield, alongside Rice and Odegaard. What Merino brings is that ability to rotate outside allowing our winger Trossard/Martinelli to move into that left halfspace.

But coming back to his main function, and that is playing as backup to Rice. I have a feeling we are going to drop Odegaard deeper next season, and sign an Attacking Midfielder to operate higher between the lines. Rice will continue to play as our box to box situational 6/8.

If we buy mikel merino, then we will be again able to see the left becoming as much of a threat when xhaka was there. The problem last year we had was rice couldnt make the line breaking passes hence we tried pairing him with havertz, jorginho and partey who could do those passes for rice. Though jorginho and partey worked out at the end we saw why havertz didnt work out.

Hopefully the tactics will again change this year but it will only get better if we buy an out and out striker or a winger like bukoyoko or nico williams. I like pedro neto but hes very injury prone. And i also would love to see martinelli at the striker role if we are not gonna sign a striker, move trossard to left, saka and jesus at right.
