One of my favorite Dave Van Ronk tunes, from his 1967 album, "Dave Van Ronk and the Hudson Dusters". His own comment on this song - "probably the best piece of singing as such I've ever done on record".

There's an excellent article on the artist and his work here:

Vinyl sound track restored using Cool Edit Pro 2.0 and Adobe Audition 3.0.

Dave Van Ronk said he had a flu when he sing this one and he couldn't even talk the very next day. By his opinion, is the best singing he has ever done on record.

This is the most sublime rendition of this song.  If any other is played at my funeral I'll come back and haunt you.

Thanks!! Spectacular song.
Love the video too. Simpler days with the needle gently moving back and forth.

Awesome. The strings make it sound like an old Drifters record.

Such a beautiful rendition. Love DVR's stuff with the hudson dusters.

I have this album, too, but do not know where it is among my thousands so the only  version I heard before this was the common one heard on You Tube's; this is quite a rendition with full orchestra it seems.  Never thought Van Ronk had this kind of instrumental back up. Great- it's all good, really.

As much as I love Ronks voice on this. There is some energy that this recording doesn't capture when compared to his acoustic versions.

This is amazing man! Do you have any Beatles or Doors in your collection that you can upload?

This is nowhere near as good as his version on the '61 album DVR Sings (reissued as DVR Sings the Blues in '65). It is also on youtube. His self-congratulatory comment with regard to this song is probably more likely to apply to that other version.

Solo1961 version from LP "Dave Van Ronk Sings" is better.

Van Ronk was great and certainly he may be the impetus behind that Ethan Coen movie, but I'll take Bob Gibson's version of this song any day. This is too bluesy, too soulful for me. Too much instrumentation. Thanks for posting it, though(I have the old LP some place around...)
