People with Parkinson’s and their families often ask about stem cells — their potential to treat disease, the state of ongoing research, and the safety of unproven stem cell therapies offered outside of clinical studies. Rachel Dolhun, MD, movement disorder specialist and vice president of medical communications at The Michael J. Fox Foundation, discusses the facts about stem cells and Parkinson’s.

The "Ask the MD" series is intended as an educational resource for people with Parkinson's and their loved ones. Please consult with your personal healthcare provider to address individual medical questions.

Thank you for the clarification. There are clinics out there that claim they’re helping Parkinson’s patients with a stem cell therapy. I doubt their credibility but as you said stem cell therapy helps with symptoms of Parkinson disease. Even if it helps very little with improving movement symptoms such as tremor, stiffness, and slowness and decreases the need for medication why it’s not widely practised and available for people until further research in the future find more promising treatments for Parkinson’s disease? You sound like those improvements with stem cell therapy is not significant while tremor, stiffness and slowness are the main symptoms of Parkinson’s disease!

I've seen almost the exact same video regarding stem cell treatment from 12 years ago. Nothing new? No trials that have shown promise in 12 years?
