NBA legend and Hall of Famer, Kobe Bryant talks about the moment in his career where he failed drastically. He air balled four times against the Utah Jazz in Game 5 of the 1997 NBA Playoffs.

Excerpt from Wikipedia about the Utah Jazz:

The Utah Jazz are an American professional basketball team based in Salt Lake City. The Jazz compete in the National Basketball Association (NBA) as a member of the league's Western Conference, Northwest Division. Since the 1991–92 season, the team has played its home games at Vivint Arena. The franchise began play as an expansion team in the 1974–75 season as the New Orleans Jazz (as a tribute to New Orleans' history of originating jazz music). The Jazz relocated to Salt Lake City prior to the 1979–80 season.

The Jazz were one of the least successful teams in the league in their early years. Although 10 seasons elapsed before the Jazz qualified for their first playoff appearance in 1984, they did not miss the playoffs again until 2004. During the late 1980s, John Stockton and Karl Malone arose as the franchise players for the team and formed one of the most famed pick and roll duos in NBA history. Led by coach Jerry Sloan, who took over from Frank Layden in 1988, they became one of the powerhouse teams of the 1990s, culminating in two NBA Finals appearances in 1997 and 1998, where they lost both times to the Chicago Bulls, led by Michael Jordan.

Both Stockton and Malone moved on in 2003. After missing the playoffs for three consecutive seasons the Jazz returned to prominence under the on-court leadership of point guard Deron Williams. However, partway through the 2010–11 season, the Jazz began restructuring after Sloan's retirement and Williams' trade to the New Jersey Nets. Quin Snyder was hired as head coach in June 2014. With the development of Rudy Gobert and Donovan Mitchell into All-Stars, the Jazz launched themselves back into title contention, eventually earning the league's best regular season record in the 2020–21 season.

I think it’s wild how people think the Mamba Mentality was developed during his career. That mentality was there ever since he was 13 years old and made a promise to himself that he was going to become one of the greatest players ever, and to never make excuses.

Kobe turned failure into growth. He was savage.

The DETAIL in Kobes words and how he explains, breaks down everything is amazing just like his game was!

I never thought about that, I just assumed he got mad at himself and went into the gym.

But he broke down why he failed and why those shots missed. And made a plan to correct it for the next.

Like the mentality is like a science the more he talks about it. Not like a brute force, no mercy on yourself kind of thing like it's being perceived as. Sure it's tough training at the end of the day, but if training ain't tough you're not doing it right to begin with imo. Kobe just broke it down so everything had purpose to go along with the fire.

He is right about how important to use failure as an opportunity to grow and become even better

Bro that's kinda interesting that he has that kind of mentality ever since he was only a child. I think family plays huge factor right here. If you teach your kids discipline, passion, consistency, being awarded in return of work etc.. those kids are basically going to be special. I'm 18yrs old right now, I love my family more than anyone and anything but that's a fact that I didn't grow up like this. That is why, it took quite time for me to learn what is discipline, how to find passion and list goes on...
Thanks to kobe though, I learned all those things. I live in Turkey, I learned english at the age of 15 and still improving in a every way I can. I always try to get better so it is what it is.
Thanks for the video mate!!

I hate loosing and looking like a fool but I never want to look in the mirror and say I'm a coward and that's why i loved Kobe. He was no coward I always love the clip of him shooting a really hard 3 against all 5 of the Kings players, he missed but hes no coward

Stuff you can never see in the stat sheets that transcends and made impact even outside of basketball.

Weight training. As a youngster, I had always thought building muscle would hinder my mobility and slow me down. But when I started weight training, it definitely enhanced my game. I had always had trouble scoring after grabbing an offensive rebound. Once I started weight training, I just powered my way up. Definitely helped. But I would advise against weight training and a very early age. Let your bones develop first.

Kobe, air balls shots: develops a mentality so powerfully inspirational that the entire world knows the code name to describe a strong and dedicated work ethic.
Lebron, air balls shot: pouts, looks at revs for foul, blames teammates.

I remember that game against the Jazz. After he put up those air balls, I looked at my buddy and said ‘this guy is garbage.’ I am glad to say that I was wrong. R.I.P. Mamba.

It took him all that thinking to realize his shots were short because he was gassed? He wasn’t self aware to know this going into the series?

Anybody can't jack up so many shots til they hit some. Most players are not going to that not bc they are scared to take them, it just don't make sense when you got 4 other pros on the court. Kobe made the game about him. If the team wins so be it but he's going to take those ridiculous shots. Not cool
