The Ladder Paradox Explained

Relativity is the idea that time and space can behave differently depending on your perspective. It is notoriously difficult to understand, but in this series, I explain the methods that helped me understand it to the best of my ability.

In case someone wants to know if the ladder would fit in the shed if the wall was indestructible, the answer is yes! Signals take time to travel, which includes the force of the impact. The front end of the ladder would collide with the wall, but the back end would continue travelling until the stopping force travelled along the length of the ladder to stop it. Since the front end would be stationary while the back was moving, the ladder would physically compress in both reference frames. This means the ladder would compress, bend, or break to fit inside the shed no matter what it was made of.

Wouldn't making the ladder foldable make it easier to store?

I recently discovered this channel and binged all the videos - especially the "almost platonic solids", I watched that video three times lol. I've heard about the ladder "paradox", but didn't get how it would be solved then - I also like that you added several variations, like the signals at light or non-light speed. Super excited for the next relativity video!

3:51 would the particles move at the same speed but the length is shorter?

Thank you so much! I had these questions ever since I saw a video of this paradox by Kyle Hill. It's great to have them finally answered.

Excellent explanation, what kind of real world experiments was done to observe this Ladder Paradox effect?

As you can see officer, I was not actually speeding

But in 8:10 the photons move at different speeds, even though c is always the same! How does that make sense????

I saw Kuvina's cute little pictograph of themself in the last physics video I watched and remember enjoying it, so seeing it again was enough for me to click on this video.

Nice video, thanks! (This paradox is very fascinating)
I like to imagine a swimming pool instead of a barn.
Does the ladder fall or not fall into the water?

The sheep example is from a Minute Physics video, I forgot which one.
