In this video, Captain Pedro shares a diagnostic secret that he learned from Garmin Marine Support while dealing with an extensive issue dealing with Gamin heading sensor problems aboard his boat.

We experienced issues with our Garmin Reactor 40 autopilot and we could not land on the issue. Like many people, we went through numerous heading sensor calibration and autopilot settings changes and it did not fix the issue. We thought we had Garmin autopilot pump problems because when we tried to complete the Garmin autopilot calibration (Sea Trial Wizard) the boat would only turn in one direction. After replacing the Garmin autopilot pump, we continued with the same issue.

We reached out to Garmin Marine Support and they gave us one thing to complete for out autopilot troubleshooting. This one step went right to the source of the issue. The issue that we had on our vessel was the Garmin heading sensor location.

We were able to relocate the heading sensor and complete the calibration steps and now it is working perfectly. We went through weeks of issues trying to land on the root cause of our issues and we want to share this secret step so that if you currently have a Garmin Marine autopilot or if you are currently Going through a Garmin Marine autopilot installation that you ensure to check this first before you complete your Garmin Marine heading sensor install. This step will take you a couple of minutes but it will save you a ton of headaches in the future!

Hi captain Pedro

I’m trying to trouble shoot my new installed autopilot.

My magnetic environment is 255
Spin quality 255… way above 100%

Something not right….
My CCU is brand new and no interference anywhere.
I moved it to multiple locations and still got the same numbers.

Could there be a problem with my garmin ghc 20?
I purchased it used.

Thanks
Paul

Will that number change as I move the CCU to different locations?

So you keep showing the CCU not the heading sensor. So which are you moving. My heading sensor is a white puck. You must be moving the CCU?
