Abraham was justified before Jesus’ incarnation. Is faith in Christ necessary for justification?

Abraham was justified by faith long before Jesus’ incarnation. Is it necessary that our faith be in Christ specifically? From one of our live events, Derek Thomas, Stephen Nichols, and Michael Reeves respond to this question.

Abraham had faith in the COMING Christ. So he still believed in Our Lord Jesus, who was yet to be named.

That last argument doesn't make sense if you consider the content of Abraham's faith to have the same power of the content of our faith in the New Testament. If this faith needs to be confirmed by works only years later (like it is in his example) that would mean that either the initial faith has no saving value until the works are performed OR that God removes our free will once we believe in order to ensure we perform the good works later. A difference between the Old Testament and New Testament seems to be a more reasonable solution, but I am open for suggestions.

Yes, faith works itself out (Philippians 2:12) but it was *not* completed by works (Galatians 3:3)
