Robotics roadmap is the most popular question I have received regarding robotics engineering. Yet, I do not see any single best roadmap. Instead, I tried to map out the field of robotics as much as possible, from control engineering, math and dynamics, coding, and artificial intelligence.

You can come at it from an EE/CE, ME or CS background. Most schools don’t have a dedicated undergrad robotics programs. In my opinion EE/CE approach is best suited cos it grounds you in the math.

did I really watch 12 minutes of a Robotics roadmap video even though I’m studying a completely different field

I have been working on Autonomous Underwater Vehicle (AUV) project using robotics approach. Im using ROS2 as a main protocol to implement my algorithm in Python or C++

For someone who hates software but absolutely loves hardware, what field would you suggest looking into more? I've been building 3d printers and drones and all things rc for many years now and having played with ardupilot a ton I want to dive another layer deeper but software scares the hell out of me lol. Recently I've designed a tilt rotor tricopter vtol and the hardware part and getting it all together was ezpz. It took me like a week just to get it to hover though 😅

btw, what happened to the mechanical design aspects of Robotics? Mechanical Design? Soft Robots?

Thanks u this is informative and helpful. I have recently graduated with a bachelor's degree in IT engineering with AI specialty, and got interested in Robotics, now I know what key points to look for.

Based on this video, should I first learn about control systems and sensors if I want to study agricultural robotics?

Can some of the other hardware abilities help out robotics engineering? Like CAD, PCB design. We don't have robotic engineering program here. ME, EE, CS only. Mechatronic engineering is the closest path I chose in ME program for robotic filed.

Very informative video. Thanks! I have a question.

I recently graduated with a degree in aerospace engineering. Unfortunately, I don’t have a background in robotics, but I’m currently building my own drone using open-source software such as Betaflight, iNav, and ArduCopter.

I want my drone to recognize a stationary object by drawing a rectangular outline around it. Once I give a command, either by pressing a switch on the radio controller or tapping the touchscreen (in the case of ArduCopter), the drone should lock onto the object and autonomously fly toward it. Think of it as a system where a drone is "captured" by a net or follows virtual waypoints guiding it to a desired safe zone.

I am familiar with building the drone itself and handling traditional flight control. However, my main question is: How can I make the drone smart enough to recognize an object using a camera, lock onto it, and then fly toward it?

I’d love to hear any insights or suggestions on how to achieve this!

Any engineer out there? I would like to discuss about whether robotic can be an engineering segment. Most engineers I know would complain that embedded systems/ control systems/ ML/ even sensor fusion along should be an expertise. Is the topic too broad or not? What do students expect to learn with “robotic” degree?

My question is, do you really, like, really have to know all thease thins? I graduated as a Automation & Robotics engineer and I can tell I know just a little of a majority mentioned in the video. Most of my knowledge comes in Control and Mechanics - all the rest, I know where to search and what to search for but I cant tell I know all thease things. I want to switch my Career from Industrial Automation (PLC's) to Robotic Software Developer.

Not to be too pedantic I hope, but I thought that mechanics, sensing, actuation, and power were also part of robotics?

Very interesting, but maybe would be good to add mechatronics design of robots. I see this map very focused on software.
