An elderly friend of mine grew up in Chicago and used to go to the clubs and see her, Ella Fitzgerald, Duke Ellington...all the greats. It must have been magical!

My mom was living in San Fran and saw Billie every night for two weeks. It was near the end for Billie but it was still great.

Like many songs, sung by many great talents .. it has to be Billy. It just has to be her. Her voice, her tone, her caress of the word, the smile and turn on it. The great, the irreplaceable Lady Day. This is beautiful.

You go to my head You linger like a haunting refrain And I find you spinning round In my brain Like the bubbles in a glass of champagne You go to my head Like a sip of sparkling burgundy brew And I find the very mention of you Like the kicker in a julep or two The thrill of the thought That you might give a thought To my plea, casts a spell over me Still I say to myself Get ahold of yourself Can't you see that it never can be You go to my head with a smile That makes my temperature rise Like a summer with a thousand julys You intoxicate my soul with your eyes Though I'm certain that this heart of mine Hasn't a ghost of a chance In this crazy romance You go to my head, you go to my head Though I'm certain that this heart of mine Hasn't a ghost of a chance In this crazy romance You go to my head, you go to my head

Best version of this song. Billie was a one of a kind. She deserved a much better life. But I thank God we have the music she left behind. Oscar Peterson on this album too, though. Immaculate.

From the 1952 10" LP (not a typo!), "Billie Holiday Sings."
The LP has this personnel:
Billie Holiday – vocals
Charlie Shavers – trumpet
Flip Phillips – tenor saxophone
Oscar Peterson – piano
Ray Brown – double bass
Barney Kessel – guitar
Alvin Stoller – drums

...but only the rhythm section is heard on this track, and, as always, Peterson and Kessel are astounding.

I also discovered this song watching Mozart in the Jungle. I have been looking for the scene on here ever since. Sweetly haunting and lingering...
