After the announcement of Google SGE (Search Generative Experience) at Google IO 2023, many people have been claiming that SEO and niche/affiliate sites will be dead in the water.

The jury is still out but this is my take on it.

What's yours? Let me know in the comments.

I think Google ads will get more expensive because there is less space and opportunity to click the ads. Also, Searchers will find simple information faster using SGE, but will need to go to fewer authority sites to gets more details, thus making authority sites even more competitive than they are now.

I've compared current results in desktop interface and GSE demo results. Mostly are the same but 'related questions' will be replaced by AI generated answers and feature snippet will replace by search generated answers.
Imo it may increase the top website traffic more than they're getting now through feature snippet.
Suppose you're searching how a thing look like. Ai can give answer in text but for better understanding and images people ultimately will go to the websites.
For short answers maybe info websites will be in danger but for detailed content, they have to visit websites.
It's not like that this box will cover the whole page for normal queries and i can say because I've compared.
If it don't give proper answer
People will scroll down as they do mostly. Rest is in hands of google and how will it perform.

😂 that tweet. Glad it helped support the drama of this otherwise logically sound piece. Nice video, Jason.

If I have to be honest, I don't think niche sites are going anywhere anytime soon. I do not expect people to utilize SGE. When you think about it - do you want your answer from AI or a content writen by humans? (assuming that what most people expectations are when they land on a site, even if it's not true). It would be interesting at first but it will die out and people would use niche sites for information. But that's just my prediction. We'll have to wait and see

AI writing being ubiquitous means indian/ African whatever bloggers are gonna find it easier to flood the western blog market if the language barrier is removed, thus increasing competition. Though surely in a sea of computer driven shit there has to be some value to an increasingly human touch.
