Greece: Refugee sparks hope in carrying the Olympic flame

A Syrian athlete who lost his leg in a bombing in his native Deir ez-Zor and who found refuge from war in Greece, carried the Olympic flame through an Athens refugee camp on Tuesday evening, as part of the torch relay for the 2016 Games in Rio de Janeiro.
Ibrahim al-Hussein, 27, carried the torch on Tuesday through Eleonas camp, where 1,500 asylum seekers have found temporary shelter as Europe struggles with its worst migrant crisis since World War II.
The symbolic gesture was intended to show solidarity with the world's refugees at a time when millions are fleeing war and persecution worldwide.
"I've arrived," Ibrahim told reporters. "Twenty-two years I've been an athlete and today I've reached my dream of being part of the Olympics. ...It is my honour to hold the torch, it is truly an honour."
Hellenic Olympic Committee president Spyros Capralos, who handed Ibrahim the flame, called the event "one of the greatest moments in my sport career."
"This flame brings solidarity and peace to people around the world," Capralos said. "Ibrahim with the flame in his hands shows that....we can have a better world for all of us."

Πρόσφυγας πυροδοτεί την ελπίδα μεταφέροντας την Ολυμπιακή Φλόγα μέσα από το Ανοιχτό Κέντρο Φιλοξενίας προσφύγων στον Ελαιώνα.
Εκεί ο Πρόεδρος της Ελληνικής Ολυμπιακής Επιτροπής Σπύρος Καπράλος μεταλαμπάδευσε το Ολυμπιακό Φως στον Ibrahim Al Hussein πρόσφυγα από την Συρία, σε μία συμβολική πράξη στήριξης του Ολυμπιακού κινήματος στους ανθρώπους αυτούς που αναζητούν ένα καλύτερο μέλλον.
Ο 27χρονος κολυμβητής και τζοντόκα Ιμπραΐμ αλ-Χουσεΐν που έχει χάσει το πόδι του σε βομβαρδισμό στη Συρία, μετέφερε τη Ολυμπιακή Φλόγα μέσα στον προσφυγικό καταυλισμό του Ελαιώνα, μία μέρα πριν την τελετή παράδοσής στους διοργανωτές των Αγώνων του Ρίο ντε Τζανέιρο στο Παναθηναϊκό Στάδιο.
«Μετά από 20 χρόνια, το όνειρό μου γίνεται πραγματικότητα, δήλωσε. Ηθελα να πάρω μέρος στους Ολυμπιακούς Αγώνες και τώρα θα γίνω λαμπαδηδρόμος της Φλόγας. Είναι μια μεγάλη τιμή για μένα».
