If you have a play bar hooked up to your TV through an optical cable you can use a streaming device like an xbox, chromecast etc to play youtube videos or podcasts through their aps. The speakers will connect to the play bar in other rooms.

Currently, I'm using Google Music, which has my music library in iTunes stored on its cloud service. I've tried a WD MyCloud External Drive in my home, but I thought the reliability of that product was very poor.

I can play music from my laptop to my Sonos speakers well, but once the computer goes into sleep mode, the music on the speakers stops.

Is there another option(s) out there aside from an in-home cloud drive or a paid monthly service, like Google Play Music, that will allow me to play my own music through my Sonos speakers without interruption?

Yes, absolutely agree. Sonos play is wireless, yet not truly 100% portable.

let's say I want this Play 5 in the living room and another speaker in the bedroom: I can buy a play 1 and use the app to play different music on the two of them at the same time? so the actual hi fi system is in the app and the play 1, 3, 5 etc are just speakers?

Would i be able to use two Play 5's and a sub for my tv? Because my idea was to use an optical cabel with an 3.5 mm adapter to plug in the cabel into one Play 5 do u think that would work? I mean it feels like it would anyway..
