Riley's GENDER Confusion in INSIDE OUT... #shorts

Have you ever thought about the deeper story in Inside Out? Rumor has it that Riley might be confused about her gender, which could explain why both girls and boys are controlling her emotions. In contrast, her mom's emotions are all girls, and her dad's emotions are all boys. The theory goes that Riley's dad is angry because of her gender confusion, which is probably why Anger's always in control, because she's not becoming the daughter he expected. Riley's mom, on the other hand, is said to be sad about it, explaining why Sadness is predominantly in control. The family might be in a bit of chaos, but they still love Riley for who she is.

I honestly think it's 'cause she's the protagonist, and we need some variety there.

They had both male and female emotions in Riley’s mind so the film wouldn’t only appeal to girls.

Theory: the dad isn’t controlled by just anger it’s the protectiveness side of Anger that’s in lead and the mom isn’t sad she’s just feeling empathy for Riley(my opinion)

Edit: ty for 3k this has never happened to me
Edit 2: Mom I’m famous :x
Edit 3: at one point u get so much likes YouTube doesn’t keep track of them

No. I think she inherited her mom’s joy, sadness, and disgust. While she got her dad’s anger and fear

Or the creators just didn’t want the movie to be too “girly” by having all girl emotions and added boys to her emotions so it is enjoyable by all

Can you guys imagine the complaint of people if Riley's emotions were all females in the first place?

Two Boys go bowling: They must be gay.
Two girls kissing: They're just good friends.
Girl has a boyfriend: I think she's gender confused.

My theory is a specific number of the *audience* is confused about Riley's gender, while Riley herself is just being herself.
Maybe she's more of a tomboy. Remember those?
When I was a little boy, I played with the girls. I played with dolls. I had a play kitchen.

Riley's male emotions are probably there because the movie would be very female-heavy. Which probably came off as a risk that might alienate little boys.
The same thing almost happened in Legend of Korra. But the test audience didn't care in that instance.
Probably wouldn't have cared with Inside Out either. since the movie was about a girl coming to terms with her emotions and had a message about embracing sadness sometimes.

Riley's not a girly girl. Doesnt mean she isnt identify as a girl. Her emotions are probably based off her personality. Which means she is girly but also a jock.

Riley could also be a girl with a tomboy personality.

from what the directors said about the adult emotions controlling riley's parents the "anger" emotion of riley's dad is more like a protective father emotion whereas "sadness" emotion controlling riley's mom is more of care all the emotions while simplified as a child get more complex as the child grows up

The real, not over-thought and preachy reason. Pixar wanted to make a film that featured a diverse cast of characters that both girl and boy movie goers could relate to. Not every piece of media has to have some deep, subliminal/unspoken message. 🤦‍♂️

I have a theory that the main emotion represents your temperament. For mom It's Sadness because she's Melancholic, for dad it's anger because he's Choleric, and for Riley it's Joy because she's Sanguine

My theory is : notice that all emotion in other people mind having their own characteristic that emit the human? Maybe the reason riley has different emotion with different style shows that riley hasnt found her "characteristic" or her own personality. Or maybe the reason the gender were differents and having different styles because the producer wants to show that riley, as the protagonist. Can be anyone, and anyone can feel like Riley, no matter style, gender, or age. As it makes her as a "uniqe" character with many uniqe stye and personality in her mind.

Its so males and females watch to movie, each characters have a MAIN emotion, Rileys is joy, the dads is angers, and the moms is sadness, back in the day Disney didn't do all that stuff too as its a KIDS MOVIE

I think what the comments are missing, is how awesome it is that anyone can take a piece of media and analyze it in a way that is meaningful and impactful to them. Thanks for sharing!

I am not homophobic, but I’d like to point out that not EVERYTHING is about gender and LGBTQ. This movie was made some 10 years ago, and I personally believe that the main emotions that are “in control” e.g Riley’s joy, Dads anger, moms sadness, are just the emotions we’re feel more than others. I’m sure Riley’s Dad is angry with his work (as pictured a few times in the movie), Riley’s mom is sad she’s losing time with her husband (hinted more subtly) and Riley is expected to be happy.
Additionally, the film probably included both girls and boys in Riley’s head to appeal to both genders.
There’s is absolutely nothing wrong with gender confusion, but I’d like to point out the LGBTQ was practically a shadow when this was made, and therefore most likely not thought of

Also her dad was angry because his daughter started acting out after the move so hes parenting her. And her koms upset because the move has really affected her and probably feels bad
