If you’re only a player (not a DM), you don’t have to buy book after book just to get access to the subclasses, just watch YouTube breakdowns and then screenshot their screenshots of the subclass pages

1:48 In one of my games, I kept a copy of every book I came across. I had them all on me (around 1000 books) to look for a specific one & when I tried to send them to the camp inventory, it crashed the game.

Level 20 games need a very specific group and a very specific kind of DM. We did it with 3 players + DM. Bloodhunter, Fighter/Rogue, Cleric/Sorcerer. We started in Curse of Strahd then went to space.

Combat did indeed take forever.

1:11 umm, or just make up a story reason why that character had to leave the party and get replaced by a new one...
A family emergency, or maybe just yearning to go find a druid to study under for a year. And maybe the character who delivers the news about the family emergency is themself a capable adventurer who wouldn't mind taking over the old character's role in the party.
