Fun Fact though, despite the tech tree ending around 1949, there's actually no hard stop for Ironman games. I know this cuz I was doing a World Conquest as Byzantium awhile back, and by the time I was invading the Americas, it was 1958. It was a horrible time finishing the USA off, despite successful landings in Alaska and Quebec. Basically to advance one tile, I had to strip Nuke that tile and every tile even remotely near it, repeatedly until I actually took it. Took until almost 1980 to actually capitulate the USA, and finally win the war and annex the rest of the world (The rest was all in the USA's faction)

The Cold War: The Iron Curtain dev team thanks you for your free promotion and explanation for why Hoi 4 is in fact designed to fit our mod.

I could imagine paradox possibly making a brand new game series about the cold war around 1950-2000?

Dunno If it would be Any good though

If I were to totally change the HOI4 years I would have it from 1933-1947, starting with Hitler’s beginnings as Chancellor and ending with the announcement of the Truman Doctrine which is often considered the start of the Cold War.

I always just kind of assumed it was because of technology. Soon after WW2, technology really starts getting fucking crazy, and the world changes so much so quickly that it's kind of difficult to replicate.

Personally, I use a mod that extends the tech tree because even after Germany and Japan collapse, there’s still so much that can happen in the game. War will almost always break out between the Comintern and Allies, and China will often fall into civil war as the central government decides to end the warlords.

I wonder why Paradox doesn't do scenarios. It would definitely allow for both cold war content to be covered in hoi4 like the Korean war and WW2 battles like Stalingrad.

Also quite disappointing that they never got the Forest Brother conflict in hoi4. It was a long lasting brutal war between the USSR and Baltic states that started during the game's timeline and got even more intense into the 50s. Unfortunately hoi4 pretty much ignores it and just has the Baltic states insta capitulate.

A Cold War continuation for the game (just like eu4 handles the "eras" mechanic) would be awesome, imagine HOI4 progressing to a more diplomatic game as mechanics and events change to fit better in a cold war scenario.

CK3: Nearly 600 years of history
EU4: Nearly 400 years of history
Vic 2: Exactly 100 years of history
HOI4: 13 years of history...

great vid but Constantinople fell in 1453 so you just mixed up the dates

I thought it ended in 1948, or the 1950s, because you get an achievement for getting to '48, and the tech tree ends in the 50s. Although 1949 is the perfect end date because it is when the cold war started in full swing.
in 1949:
china became communist
soviets got the bomb
Nato was founded.
Berlin airlift came to an end
west germany founded
the term "cold war" is used in a speech for the first time
The tito-stalin split
Another good end date could have been, while this is pushing it, 1959, because of the cuban revolution, and the subsequent bay of pigs invasion, which almost ended the world.

Here's how I see it when you do a game about a specific time period: if you do it too long and extend the tech tree, you get some guys with futuristic tech; if you don't extend the tech tree, every hobo catches up to super powers.

Perhaps it could end in 1952; with the formal end of WWII at the Treaty of San Fransico. It was the treaty between Japan and the US.

If it would be longer players would by the start date alone expect some sort of cold war mechanics which HoI4 kind of isn't the rigth game for

I think it's something to do with a possible operation unthinkable, because even when you go historical, war inevitably breaks out between the comintern and the allies

Honestly, i always wish Hearts of Iron had started with ww1, and ended with the official start of the cold War, it would have really cool.

1949 makes sense, because once the USSR got nuclear weapons, a WW2 style war was no longer possible, being replaced by Cold War mutually assured destruction. Since HOI4 is a WW2 game, that makes sense to end it there.

My 1939 WC Poland game took me to 1952 too achieve a WC so technically there's no end date in hoi but I wish ck3 and eu4 was like this

30 years sounds short but its long if you count in how long one year takes late game.
