In April 1980, at a meeting of general managers outside London, Jack Tramiel declared he wanted a low-cost color computer. When most of the GMs argued against it, he said: "The Japanese are coming, so we will become the Japanese." This was in keeping with Tramiel's philosophy which was to make "computers for the masses, not the classes".

Cheese and Onion looks really impressive for the VIC20

Cheese and Onion is a bizarre technical achievement, mainly because the VIC20 doesn't have any horizontal smooth scrolling register. So, every bit of horizontal scrolling has to be achieved with characters that show parts of two different neighboring tiles. It ends up being a ton of different combinations even with a small number of tiles.
