Designing a board game - Different types of board game genres

Listing different types of board game genres sounds like it should be an easy task but by heck it is not!!

Asking 10 people to describe the type of board game they like usually ends up with 10 different ways of describing 10 different games.

In this vid, I explore the list of genres *I think* should be when we describe board games.

All the tips come from my own research in understanding what it takes to make a good board game. Hopefully, you'll find them as useful as I did!

Hi all. Wow! I really thought this would be a quick and simple video to make - boy was I wrong! I found the internet full of differing views on what board game genres should exist - what the best way of listing the types of board games were - none of them seemed to be complete. This vid is my attempt of putting that right - all done in a hopefully logical and helpful way.

Hey Ali. First of all huge fan of your video series. I got fooled by the thumbnail and though this will be a video about you reflecting on the difficulties you are facing on your own project (maybe the topic on another video). But this one was good, maybe a bit too generic. However the titan task to cover the game mechanic could be interesting for people, like you and I, who know a bit more about games but are after more depth and insight . Keep up the good job. Ben

Most of Carl Chudyk's games(and games inspired by them) seem to be good examples of card games with not-so-necessary boards. Fort is also a good example

Really great content. I was going to ask if you were designing a game at the moment but I've just seen Julian's comment and your reply below! I'm a UX Designer and use a lot of research methods in my day-to-day work. I'm working on a simple card game now and applying those same methods and its been great. Would love to see what you're working on too, gimme a shout if you ever want any help!

I never understood this concept of "gateway" game. I belive ANY game might be a gateway game. I think that THEME is way more important then mechanics when considering a what will be a good game to introduce someone into the hobby. Presenting then with a game wiche the theme resonates with then is way more efficient then anything else.

I love your videos over all, but I would say that I didnt like that you said that most of us are making board games for just hobbyist. Your excluded the millions and millions of people that would probably love to play games. I think that is a huge problem in our "hobby" is that we exclude instead of include.
