Episode 236 of Love At First Scent

This was a YouTube Live broadcast streamed on Saturday 11th December 2021. Unscripted. Unedited. Unrehearsed.

In this episode, I presented my list of the top 10 best perfumes for winter 2021.

Introduction 0:00
Akro Dark 5:20
Hermes Equipage Geranium 10:00
Serge Lutens La Myrrhe 13:15
Robert Piguet Casbah 18:10
Tom Ford Ombre Leather parfum 22:35
Eris Night Flower 27:45
Ostens Preparation Jasmine Absolute 32:30
Histoires De Parfums 1740 37:15
Comme Des Garcons 2 Man 40:45
Maison Francis Kurkdjian Aqua Vitae 44:25

Here's the blotter update:

- Gosh, what a gorgeous fan of blotters to return to after a few hours. On one end of the scale, the Hermes, the Kurkdjian and the Comme Des Garcons maintain their whisper-subtle elegance, with Aqua Vitae coming across as especially tender and heartfelt. Then somewhere towards the middle of the 'loudness' scale we have Casbah (pushing out a rooty earthiness surprisingly reminiscent of Comme Des Garcons Rouge) and Night Flower (gently and yet unmistakably purring with animalics). 1740 lounges about in its decadent boudoir of immortelle and vanilla. Dark may be relying a touch too heavily on brash woods, but it has plenty to offer by way of its chocolate-inflected patchouli. And the Tom Ford is hovering closer to Dubai than I'd expected, but it doesn't descend into rose-leather cliches. The standout in a terrific collection is La Myrrhe: rubbery, warm, celestial, mossy and sweet. Not just full of contrasts, but an endless cycle of ever-shifting contrasts.

Incidentally, the Ostens jasmine oil is beautiful too: delicate and serene.

During the cold season, I tend to wear more ambery and balmy perfumes, or spicy incensy ones. I like the warm embrace they offer for the first ones and the introspective mood they support for the latter. Both are a way to reconnect. With my inner self, with memories and the past (mine or in general) etc. But I agree that a floral fragrance can also be a real treat. These last days, I loved to wear Cartier's Baiser Volé which I haven't done for a while. Its green floralcy which oscillates between innocence, tenderness and sensuality is particularly refreshing and uplifting when the days are grey and short. It reminds me of walks in nature during Spring time. You mention Eris Parfums in your list. I also enjoy Nightflower very much as well as Green Spell though I'm not a lover of green perfumes usually. Still need to check out Ostens.

Thank you so much for this beautiful review of ERIS Night Flower! "Luminous leather...lifted and cooled by spices." So dreamy! I'm glad you got to sniff Scorpio Rising and I'm sure Antoine & I (double trouble!) will have fun talking to you. It's so great how much time, care, and poetic precision you give to each of these fragrances.

In my opinion Green Spell is hands down superior to Synthetic Jungle. I am completely drawn back to Green Spell time and time again. Purchased Night Flower and I am planning on adding Green Spell soon. My favorite from Akro is Smoke. Love Ostens discovery set!

For this Winter, I will wear Iris Ganache Guerlain, Tonka Impériale Guerlain, Jardins d'Armide Oriza L.Legrand, Le Régent Oriza L.Legrand, Vanille Mona di Orio, Epic Woman Amouage...I would love to see Gourmand Coquin Guerlain come back since it's a perfume I really appreciate wearing when it's cold outside. And its chocolate note is very appropriate for this festive season. I also enjoy L'Heure Défendue Cartier very much and it's a pleasure to wear in that time of year. I choose my perfumes from day to day, seeing where my inspiration and my mood are taking me.

Eris, ..I learned about That co. From your interview….and I love all the scents. Green Spell is my favorite and does so well in the colder weather. I have Mxxx too and Night Flower ( which I always call Nocturnal Flower…would’ve been a great name because it does smell like a living night!).
Thank you for all your videos.

Your lists are always unexpected and thought-provoking. I have wanted to try HdP 1740 for a long time, but never got around to it. Thank you for reminding me!

oooh! Equipage Geranium is one I’ve never tried! Winter makes me think of leather & musky fragrances (rather than sweet & patchouli), so I’ll have to find some to sample. Thank you for the great ideas & fragrances I don’t know about! We adore your videos! My husband & I really enjoyed your panels at ScentXplore! Cheers!

Thank you for another thoroughly enjoyable episode. Upon your recommendation, I had ordered the Akro sample set a while back, and have just sprayed Dark. The opening chocolate notes are indeed a relish; shame that these should evaporate so soon. This opening reminded me of another "chocolate" fragrance, albeit one where the gourmand aspect remains dominant, and which does not veer into patchouli/woody territory. Bonus for those based in the UK, the "nose" is based in London. Check out 4160 Tuesdays' Over the Chocolate Shop if I have piqued your curiosity.

Thank you for the video! Very informative, as always. :) The perfume I'll be wearing this winter is Wazamba by Perfum d'Empire and Coco. Definitely must try Casbah. Sounds divine!
