Orange County man found dead in Death Valley ran out of gas

Park visitors found the body of David Kelleher on Tuesday, a park statement said.

Poor guy. Death Valley, as its namesake implies, is a very unforgiving place though beautiful. I live about 1.5 hours away from the park, and have seen many unprepared visitors underestimating themselves and the temperatures. Dehydration and heat stroke can set in quickly and with little to no warning.

Do what the locals do.
You should only drive-through Death Valley at night when it's cooler with a full tank of gas, and even bring along a full jerry can, also, bring plenty of food, water, and cash.
Death Valley is a serious undertaking, read the sign.

RIP. When traveling in the western lands, number 1 rule is half tank is empty. Always fill up when it gets below 3/4 full.

People don’t realize how long it is. Need a full tank. But there should be emergency phones or something to contact someone to help.

Was in the Mohave desert years ago, came across a couple from England on vacation when their rental car developed transmission problems, offered assistance but they had the rental service on there way, bleak terrain out in the middle of nowhere, be prepared for the unexpected.

This. This is heartbreaking and disturbing. The most painful and slow way to die. That's why it's called Death Valley.

Having driven through DV and across the desert several times, I always try to carry extra water per person, 1st aid, weapons, and a fire extinguisher. Non-perishable snacks and extra clothing are also good to have. I am not sure what I might have done if I broke down, but walking out with the sun overhead seems like a bad idea! RIP stranger!

The more ethanol they put in gas the lower the gas mileage. I notice a drop in MPG my last road trip.

I ran out of gas to, first time in years luckily I was in town. Somethings up with this fuel.

Sad, a bit of advice. Fill your tank, if you cant, , , , know your limits. Last of all, having been there. If your run out of gas, open the car windows, get out and crawl under the car. You last much longer in the shade. Never try to walk out there without water, and an umbrella. Imagine that, and umbrella in the middle of the desert

Looks like a suicide because everyone knows 1 gallon of gas only gets you 25 miles

That is why I bring a personal locator beacon whenever I go hiking or spotty areas. Best $300 peace of mind that I ever spent.

when i was younger my family one day were all freaking out because apparently my uncle had just saved a family that was about to die out in death valley. They had broken down and were stranded with no water on a extremely hot period and had been out there for some time. They loaded onto my unlces truck and he took them to where there was service and some were life flighted and made it while others had a ambulance arrive if im not mistaken. Ever since then that place has sounded scary as hell to me

There was a gas station nearby but he opted not to go because it's $10 a gallon
