Will a 500-ton hydraulic press be able to pierce tank armor with its tip?

"Do not repeat this at home" - doh, I was just plugging my 500 ton hydraulic press in 😂

Interesting demonstration- thank you. The front armour of the T-34 was sloped to deflect a significant projectile. As such, even a 26 kg round would never be able to achieve such a deep penetration. What surprises me is how ductile the metal is.

I'd be interested in seeing if the temperature increases while pressing.

The AR 500 steel was probably stronger it was just a lot thinner than the tank armor

900, 000 pounds of force concentrated to a fine point, yeah that should do some damage.

This is why we need stalium metal

That's good armor. It didn't disintegrate into spall fragments flying into the crew compartment. It deformed and soaked the damage while keeping the vehicle and crew safe and minimizing penetration. Impressive. The engineers thought out that armor well and built it well.

depleted uranium would be interesting to see

The AR-500 has a Brinell Hardness Number of around 500 (of course), the BHN of tank armor is usually around 400. I was really surprised to see the press make it seem as though the armor were a chunk of lead. I was expecting an explosive shatter.

Love how it just goes through the metal with ease. Satisfying 😌

Yea they are more durable than I thought

It would be interesting to see the temperature as you are applying pressure.

THIS TAKES LOW VELOCITY GUNS PENETRATION TO AN WHOLE NEW LEVEL 😂

The science behind metal being penetrated at a super-high speed, like an inbound Tungsten round, is weird. The plate will actually have a plug shot out the other side. It is dislodged by a fracture of the atomic structure of the metal. Once we were wrecking massive forges and huge ground blocks, as well as hardened mill rolls at a foundry near Chicago. We were dropping huge chunks of the mill rolls with a magnet crane, hitting the forges with the chunks trying to shatter as much as we could before using bazookas and lance bars to 5-foot the metal. We were partially cutting the 5-foot hi-hard rolls and then doing the "Dumbo-drops" to finish the job. My friend in the crane dropped probably a 4-ton piece onto a mill roll, and almost missed the end of the roll on the ground. It just nicked it. We heard a loud ring, we heard a piece whistle through the air. There was a tall-grass field next to the burn yard. There was a fire erupting. We had to run out there to put it out. We found the piece laying there, blue-steel hot, almost luminescent. had happened, is a piece the exact shape of a slice of watermelon was knocked off the edge of the mill roll. That piece had edges so sharp that they would cut paper, like a knife. Not broken like cast iron, but dislodged. The principle of atomic shear, the breaking of the actual atomic valence forces holding the metal alloy together between atoms. The alloy rolls are almost impervious to normal mechanical shearing. Under incredible impact, shear forces will take over through the metal that is atomic related. That piece was hot enough to light a fire, and the area right at the break of the big roll had some residual heat, and was blue-colored from the instantaneous heat generated throughout the fracture, as the atomic force was ruptured and the pieces separated!! This sometimes happens in an armored vehicle hit with a non-explosive kinetic round. The piece knocked loose, if that happens, will set the vehicle or ammo inside on fire!

Can you measure temperature of deformed metals? Iam interested how much heat does this produce

I would be curious to see how much temperature increased at the end of most of these demonstrations!
