Microsoft uses same strategy, they allow retailers like us to use windows unlicensed copy, when we start working in offices, they recover the cost through licenses and companies have to pay the huge amount in liecnses as most of user are comfortable in windows OS only.
offices cannot use unlicensed windows there is a heavy penalty for that.

Tally is one of the outdated software from which extracting data is very difficult in an organised manner I am a CA student and it is pretty difficult to extract data and organise it as per the needs of an auditor. It involves too much of manual entries and as compared to SAP and other software tally do not provide some of the latest features required such as it is very difficult to track who has passed a particular entry in a GL account which is much easier

This same technique was also used by Microsoft. Because when computers came in india there were many people who were using pirated window software but bill gates allowed because he wanted indians to get used to it.

Most people use pirated version of Tally for learning purpose. If you are using it for professional purpose then you have to use original, otherwise there are some restrictions of using some features like you cant change the date
