Food for thought. This situation with the FTC’s new rule on "junk fees" perfectly illustrates how the government creates a systemic problem and then offers superficial solutions that fail to address the root cause, all while maintaining the illusion of action.

Government policies allowed businesses to charge hidden fees in the first place, prioritizing deregulation and corporate profits over consumer protection. These “junk fees” didn’t appear out of nowhere. They were enabled by a system that turns a blind eye to exploitative practices as long as corporations benefit. Now, after years of consumer frustration, the government steps in with a rule requiring transparency, but transparency doesn’t fix the issue.

The root cause, corporations being allowed to nickel-and-dime consumers through unnecessary fees, remains untouched. Instead of banning the fees outright, the government opts for a surface-level fix that makes it easier to see the exploitation but does nothing to stop it. This gives the appearance of action while ensuring the system that created the problem stays intact, continuing to serve the interests of corporations rather than the people.
