I'm a parenting coach and one of my favourite parenting tips is "Toy Rotation". I was doing this 30 years ago with my kids and it worked great. You're absolutely right, they not only make less mess but are more likely to play longer as not surrounded by chaos and distraction. Yes, they looked at those old toys that had been away for a month or 2 as if they were brand new. I also had designated play areas of the house which meant that nothing ever went missing, was all contained in either their rooms or the family room. As I was watching I kept saying “oh my gosh, yes!” I use the same method and have for 7 years now and it just works! Toy rotation is difficult for my older one because of her advanced brain she knows she’s bored with them as soon as they come out but it works for my 1 year old and he loves just taking out the toys and moving to new bins. I have all the smaller toys categorized into a cubby and each cubby has it’s own collection; cars, books, sorters, puzzles, etc. I also use this for my daughters crafting things. She has a bin for stickers, beads, paints, and one for card games because we love to play cards :) just told my husband wow, this lady is amazing and I do exactly what she does I should be making money organizing for people too! A while ago target had all their plastic storage bins on sale. I bought so many different sizes and organized all the kids toys. We are lucky enough to have a spare bedroom so I just store them all in a closet and when the kids are bored of what they have out they can chose a bin or two. It works perfect!

I di this rotation thing when my boys were little and every time I rotated, they got so excited because it was like "new" toys to them. It also saved my sanity.

I found out about toy rotation by accident. I was cleaning my garage and I had some toys that my kids didnt play with anymore in clear storage bins. My daughter saw them and said I forgot about this toy!! And this one!! Omg!! I used to love this doll!!" So my light bulb lit up and toy rotation started!!! Great video!! Carson is just too cute for words!!

Love this post! My son's therapist suggested this very thing, and IT WORKS!!! It totally feels like new toys when we do the toy rotation.

I so appreciate this reminder. I did this when my son was young. Now he's 9 but he easily gets anxiety and loves things to be organized. He loves watching your videos and immediately wants to go to the DT and get even more organized. Lol. I think it's time we purged and put some things away for a rotation . I'm an in-home child care provider (finishing my first year very soon) and I will be implementing toy rotation as soon as we move the child care into our newly refinished basement. Right now, the kids can access SO many toys and it just makes our small space trashed multiple times a day with toys that just got dumped out that nobody even played with. I'm excited to implement a less is more approach! Thanks for the tips!

I LOVE LOVE LOVE the 5-min clean up rule! Why didn't I think of that?!?! Going into motion tomorrow (we do toy rotation already but the amount takes more than 20 min to find and put all back together, it becomes a whole family activity for one toddler! New baby due at the end of this month, 5 minutes sound SO much better! Thanks!

I love this Kathryn! We were gifted a bench for our wedding 3 years ago. We didn't realize it wasn't well made when we registered for it so we never sat on it. it just took up space in our home. now that we have a toddler and baby we put it in our office where I work and it houses all of their toys/stuffed animals/puzzles. If a toy doesn't fit in there we get rid of something. (They also have a play kitchen and doll house but obviously those don't apply. lol.) But I LOVE this video because that bench is FULL. It's hard to access things on the bottom. I'm starting toy rotation this weekend! Thank you!

As always great info! And I second the request for art/craft supplies! I am a teacher and an artist the stuff overtakes the house. One thing to keep in mind for artists anyway is that unless you can see it you may forget you have it. =)

I'm an ECE for 20+ yrs and toy rotation is at the top of my list, I have been doing it for years. I was known for toy and room rotation at the daycare I worked at. I now work from home and do it here as well :) I also did it with my own daughter when she was younger. Thanx for sharing Katharine, you look really good!!!
