Journey is such a once in a lifetime band that had the greatest vocalist of all time. Hard to do a cover, but you really did Journey proud on this one. Great cover man!

Steve didn’t really lose his voice, it just got more raspy and it got more weighty which meant that the top notes weren’t as easy for him overtime, partially from over-touring and partially from age since the voice tends to get deeper and more mature with age. By raised on radio he was 37 and by trial by fire he was 47. But it wasn’t like Robert Plant or Elton John where he had to get surgery. Maybe if he had used a more chesty mixed voice then his voice would have sustained better, but he probably wouldn’t have gotten the sound he wanted.

Ken Tamplin sounds like the original lead vocalist for Foreigner. I always hear Foreigner even when he sings Journey.

since I had no money when I was a kid, Ive never seen Journey with Perry, but I have seen them with every post Perry singer, including Jeff Scott Soto. Ive seen Dean Castronova do this song and tear it up, and watching him play the drums to this was awesome. Amazing version from Ken as normal. I think this came out in 1983... I wore this tape out on the old Walkman also:)

something that i really love about Ken's interpretation of a song is that his vocals usually go to a beefier sound and with really powerful high notes, and you can still see that in this version even if he gets a little bit more gentle in some parts, you're truly a monster and a inspiration for me as a singer, keep rocking as always dude! 🤘

Ken, you're a killer vocalist. I've seen a number of your videos now. I do notice that on your vowels you have a very unique tongue placement. It's pointed, and I don't know if that happens naturally for you as a mouth shape or if it's a conscious decision. You have great vowel sounds so I wondered if it was purposeful. Hearing Steve Perry in 1978, for the first time, I decided I wanted to sing. Kind of my personal "Beatles/Ed Sullivan" moment. He was on of my greatest influences and learned his technique (s) over many years to emulate him quite well. At 52, I'm proud to say I can still sing the Escape album, through it's entirety, and finish with a few choice picks from Departure without taking a break. I call it a good workout/exercise. 😆
