It is striking how certain leaders of nations of insignificant geopolitical weight, who pass before their societies as great patriots and defenders of national interests, are basically pawns on a board dominated by pieces with much more political and economic power, which only keep the little ones in play as long as they are useful to them against the pawns of the opposite team. Papadopoulos is an archetypal figure of the Cold War, and of that paradox. And there are several more examples on both sides of the Iron Curtain.
