In this video, I take a look at the long forgotten Golden Girls spin-off "The Golden Palace." Was it good? bad? Or just simply, not the same.

I loved this review!! Exactly what I was looking for after finishing the show this afternoon, a kind of debriefing. Very much appreciated.

I agree with most of what you said. Blanche and Rose’s character development was really well done and didn’t feel forced or corny, and it also managed to let Blanche acknowledge her and her family’s past misdeeds in a mature and compassionate manner, without making them out to be a monster.

She may be a nearly middle aged but still young and radiant lady of 42 (lol) but she’s very willing to admit her mistakes and strive to do better. I really appreciated that. I’ve always been very liberal but also loved Blanche, and I worried they were going to assassinate her character in order to make a (valid) point. But instead she’s grown and learned and I couldn’t be happier.

And Rose did a great job taking up a leadership role in place of Dorothy. I think she has also grown a lot and learned about herself and how strong she can be.

As for Sophia, I think we’re just seeing her letting her hair down and running wild because Dorothy isn’t around to keep her in line, and it’s great to see. She also showed some development in the Stan episode, which was also well done (and I loved that funeral scene, the bit with Stan taping over his own final message with a random bikini competition had me rolling).

I'm six seasons into The Golden Girls right now and after watching this video, I do plan to add Golden Palace to my Hulu watchlist.

Had no idea this even existed. Need to give it a go.

The show had potential, but I suppose the Golden Girls had pretty much run their course. The concept of three older women with no hotel experience selling their house, their only source of equity, to purchase a rundown hotel in a city with so many excellent ones, was also not very realistic. The kid actor did not even survive the first few episodes, as his character was dropped.

The show was funny but it started to recycle stories from Golden Girls. One of the episodes had Ricardo Montelban as the owner of the neighboring hotel and the perfect distraction for Blanche. Something like that should have been explored as a side story to keep the hotel part interesting. I think it could have lasted a couple more seasons but not more than maybe 4. But to the Golden Girls credit, there were other spin offs that lasted longer. Empty Nest and Nurses. Nurses was a spin off of Empty Nest but it had ties to the Golden Girls.

I love Golden Palace.
I think that the big stigma of not having Bea on it and the fact of being constantly compared to GG didn't make it any favor.. To me it shines on its own...
As much as I like Dorothy on GG, I don't miss her at all on GP. In fact her 2 episodes are the ones I skip..
I love the new chemistry with Cheech Marin and Don Cheadle. And it gave us a chance to enjoy Rue, Betty and Estelle for 24 episodes more (well, 22 to me). They were marvelous.
It deserved at least a second season, and even more.. 💜🌿

Bea Authur Was the star of Golden girls that's why after she left the show it fell apart anyone could have played Blanche or Rose or Sophia but only one person could have ever played Dorothy and that was bea

i have to say the shows not bad but i don't really like sequel shows as an idea i kind of would of just introduced a new girl or just have left it alone after bea arthur let sitcoms are great but the can only be funny for so long any sitcom that gets past 10 s easons is pushing it
