Thank you so much for this unabridged version read by Paul Shay. In 1989, a reviewer wrote in the newspaper Chicago Tribune: "Paul Shay, who has a voice as serene as a sunset over the desert."

Actual Author's words (Author's Introduction) starts at 5:10, if you want to get past the rules for renting the audiobook tape (lol) and book reviews

I read Desert Solitaire in High School decades ago.
Reread several times since then and yesterday finally able to explore Arches live.
Now enjoying this audio book tremendously. Thank you.

Thank you so much for posting this. I want to read this as a companion to some of my current classes, but the idea of reading it on top of those readings is unrealistic at best. So listening to it as an audiobook is a pleasant alternative.

I miss his voice but his words are, hard to say anything about, rough beauty.

The only thing better would have been for Abbey to read it himself.

Is it known if Abbey ever read any Nietzsche? There is of course his use of the "gaze into the abyss" quote but everyone knows that. There doesn't seem to be any real impression that he was aware of Nietzsche but the overlap both in ideas and in style is remarkable.

Greg Brush, where can we get copies of this and other Paul Shay readings of Abbey? I'm worried that this one will be taken down and we'll be stuck with the more recent audiobooks, which are not read nearly as well.
