"Since I don't have required qualifications to check it, I will hire/ask a professional to do it. "

Send a licensed qualified technician or an engineer to test it and run diagnostics. What a dumb interview question.

This is a solid interview question around problem solving and willingness to ask questions. Obviously you probably are not an elevator expert, but your job as the interviewee is to identify what counts as "working" and any potential blockers for it

I think the answer is to know you arent qualified to conclude it yourself and then to seek the answer elsewhere - aka the technicians/mechanics for that brand of elevator

"How to test an elevator" give it a question paper an answer sheet and a pen.

Unit Tests:
Test the various components of the elevator in isolation e.g. Measure the tensile strength of the cable, remove the cable and check the brakes engage, use the emergency call system

Integration Tests:
Actually travel using the elevator - first with just a weight then with your internal staff

Production Tests:
Record data about the elevators usage and get user feedback to answer the following questions - how frequent are failures, what fails the most, what are average wait times, etc. Use the information learned to revise the mechanism, algorithm for elevator calling, etc

"What's wrong with the elevator?"

No one thought of asking...🤦🏻‍♂️

Considering this is a Microsoft job question, I'd take an approach web developers would use on a website. Make a program that has the elevator go up/down every combination of start/stop locations empty. If it passes that, repeat with 50% weight capacity, 75%, and so on. An elevator needs to be tested if it can perform all its intended functions and if it meets weight capacity.

So first I'd give it a text book to study and then give it it a 30 question algebra test with 4 open ended questions at the end. Best way to test an elevator.

How would "you" test an elevator?

Answer. "Call Otis and ask where I should start."

These gotcha or open ended interview questions aren't all that helpful in hiring unless you get a specific answer.

My favorite answer to "how many ping pong balls could you fit on a bus?" Was when the person responded "one"

Because without knowing the size of the bus but knowing the general size of all ping pongs balls you can assume at least one would fit on most busses even toy ones. All the way up to full size extended busses.

The interviewer wanted an elaborate answer but just got a correct one word response.

No idea if the person got hired still my favorite answer to that question.

Also, if you ever get the "sell me this 'pen'" as a condition for being hired. Take the 'pen (or whatever is offered) and start to walk away with it as if you were going to leave. Go to the parking lot if you have too. Eventually, they will follow you and ask for it back (sometimes assuming you're leaving the interview). Turn around and say "oh this, you can have it for $5.00" may negotiate the price down and then 'sell' it back to them.

Granted at this point this method is pretty well known. However, they will likely still want their item back so it is likely to work.

As a Test Engineer I can literally think of a million test cases to test an elevator around Functional testing, performance, stress and load, safety, accessibility…etc. To the people saying “you’d get a qualified engineer to test it”, I think the point of the question is that it’s assumed you are the qualified engineer. I highly doubt Microsoft are asking the HR girl this type of interview question. These type of questions are actually really common in developer/QA interviews. I once got asked how would I test a Pepsi can 😂

I would start by calling around for invoices from companies with the correct accreditation and certifications to be doing that sort of job.

It's an algorithmic question. Likely it's asked to coders in order to gauge their ability to adapt to new projects in order to anticipate the order of operation
