The US House Appropriations Committee advanced a spending bill to fund the Department of Health and Human Services and other federal programs, next year. However, for the first time since 1976, it does not include the Hyde Amendment, a provision that bans federal funding for most abortions. Pro-life lawmakers on the House Appropriations Committee call this a defeat, but in the same breath say this is not the end of the war. They vow this bill will not make it out of Congress without the Hyde Amendment and other anti-abortion provisions. Representative Tom Cole, Vice Ranking Member of the committee says, "There is no negotiation here. There's no compromise here. It was a Democratic decision to upset what had been a compromise between the two parties that had stood the test in time for over 45 years." Representative Ashley Hinson and Jeff Fortenberry also spoke out. House Republicans say if this new bill is not passed by September 30th, the policies negotiated last year would remain in effect. In a statement, the Supreme Knight of the Knights of Columbus, Patrick Kelly stated, "We're extremely disappointed by recent actions to take away longstanding bipartisan taxpayer and conscience protections including the Hyde Amendment." Capitol Hill Correspondent, Erik Rosales reports.
