Instead of controlling the LED brightnes one of the Digipots are used to control the volume of a speaker being driven with a square wave from pin 8 on the Arduino. The square wave frequency is also varied using the tone function.

Hi

That's really interesting.

If I understand it the LEDs are cycling through a sequence where the digipot, through the controller, offers less and less resistance creating the brightness swell.

Could an arduino/digipot be used in a similar way to control a digipot in a guitar pedal that would increase or decrease the volume of an audio signal over a given time to create a uniform fade in?

Do the increases have to come in discrete steps or would it be possible to have the increase have a logatithmic increment over time to replicate an audio/logaritmic potentimeter?
