UAD Sound City Studio Plugin for Electric Guitar ReAmping

I don't think there's enough people talking about the virtual guitar cab function built into the new Universal Audio Sound City plugin. I'll record some line level signals into an Apollo with a Matchless tube pedal, run the signal into the Sound City plugin with their virtual cab preset and hear how it sounds.

We'll also go a step further by recreating that tone with a real amp in the MillSounds live room with some room mics and compare the two. This might be the best virtual cab setup I've heard!

The literal watermill on the approach to the studio is one of the coolest things I've ever seen.

End of video: I feel like the big difference maker in these rooms is mostly the ceiling height; SC was literally a big factory room where they made VOX amplifiers back in the day.

Your space actually sounds very good for a small to mid size room, but pretty much none of us with residential studios can compete with the way sound is free to float around within a big giant room. With such a high ceiling dimension there's virtually no comb filtering going on in the mids, so the 2-7k range is a lot more clarified and smoother.

This is a crazy plugin. My vst drums suddenly became real live drums and the tweaking (decay and more) on in the vst really shines combined with the different parts of the plugin.

Thanks for the comparison! I didn’t dive into this plugin too much so I didn’t even realize it had a cab in the room. I tried on drums and wasn’t really digging it until I tweaked it a lot. It’s definitely a plugin that will take some time and experimentation to really find its strengths. I’ve used the ows for years but now that I have a proper live room I use it much less.
I’m glad you mic’d your amp so I could have a reference point as I’ve never played a Matchless so I’m not tuned to its sound. I’d say the biggest differences were in the high mids. The real room and amp had much more bite and jangle. The UA and preamp still had all the tone and speaker push without as much high mid.
Both sounded good and mostly could complement each other in a mix.

I was almost finished my album when this plugin was released. Like, just finishing off my masters. I love this so much, it adds that missing link between your home studio and that multi million dollar space. I ended up adding it to my mastering chain in Ozone 10 and choosing a drum room and the end result is like night and day. I’ve put all the songs in the same room and it just sounds fantastic!

Another amazing video. Keep up with the good content! You have an amazing recording and mixing facility.I agree with you, sound city sounds more over the top and roomier than ocean way. The close mic tone sounds super wet. I’ve been using OWS for a few years now and was interested in another room modeling plugin, just a different flavor. I had a good discount and bought it in the end. Note that you can also use OWS as cab simulator, maybe idea for another video.

I downloaded this awesome sounding plugin to my m1 air to try. Just added on a drums with couple of other plugins. But crackling sounds occurred immediately. Is there anyone use this plugin without having problem?

how would you use it with an amp sim? I’ve done amp sim without a cab into Sound City in Reverb Mode and it sounds great but I’m not sure wether theres a better way
