When I bought my house the dish washer kept overflowing through the airgap at the top of the sink. The inspector and my husband were certain it was the existing airgap malfunctioning. It was replaced and problems persisted.
Before calling a plumber I took a minute to clean up under the sink. Still attached to the disposal was a tag instructing the removal of the plug. The previous owners had skipped that step and just stopped using the dishwasher.
Reading instructions is important.

When I got my job in apartment maintenance, I applied in person and stated clearly that I had no idea how to do the job, but I learn quickly and listen well. They hired me the next day. When it comes to these blue collar jobs don't lie about knowing what you're doing. People love to teach you if you're willing to learn.

I've witnessed master plumbers forgetting to knock out the dishwasher plug.
What's funnier is knocking out when you shouldn't

I worked for a contractor for a while and they thought I had a lot of experience. I didn't. I am, however, very good at reading instructions which came with everything we installed. And I was twice as fast the second time.

I’m not a plumber but I’ve installed maybe half a dozen disposals for family or friends. All without any problems. I recently put a new one in my kitchen and forgot the plug. Then my wife ran the dishwasher later that day and well it filled up and she opened it and dumped water everywhere. I look on the bright side. She told everyone and now no one will ever ask me to help them install one again 🙂

I’m not a plumber but I’ve installed quite a few garbage disposal’s for me and other family members. Well after one family member saw me do it months prior, they thought it was easy to (and it is) and decided to replace the broken one in their downstairs in-laws kitchen. I had no idea they were doing so but I happened to call them shortly after they had did it and in talking to them found out they were having issues with the dishwasher holding water and not draining. The dishwasher was new and was draining fine before they decided to put the replacement garbage disposal in. Well I asked them a few questions and quickly got to the question of wether or not they had punched out the knock out on the garbage disposal where the water from your dishwasher is supposed to pump it’s water to? The answer I received was, “there’s a knock out in there?”. I laughed pretty hard and said yeah, it’s sealed off for people that install the garbage disposal without having a dishwasher hooked to it. I then told him to take the dishwasher drain hose off, use a long screw driver and hammer, put the screw driver in that hole and hit it lightly with the hammer to punch out the knock out, then be sure to pull out the little piece you knocked out and then hook everything back up. Sure enough he did all that without damaging the garbage disposal and everything worked fine after that. He was actually considering taking the dishwasher back to the store because they thought it was malfunctioning from not draining and a red error light that came on and wouldn’t go away. After they did the fix, all the issues went away and everything worked perfectly. Turns out like normal it was user error or in this case inexperienced installer error. So I very much agree that this is a very commonly overlooked issue that occurs.

Should've cleaned those burrs off the pipe. You'll learn everyday in the field

As a appliance repair guy, its incredible the amount of times ive shown up for a call about a dishwasher draining out of the overflow, only to see its because the garbage disposal plug was never removed.

Happened to my dad. He told me about it. I learned from him and made sure to knock out the plug.

You didn’t even fully lock the disposal into the carrier 😂

I'm not a pro plumber, but installed about 15 disposals to know to knocking out the disposal plug, if needed, is one of the first things I do. Also, I made a disposal lift made from a old car scissor jack, made installing a lot easier by not to having to position and hold the disposal while tightening the lock ring.

As a Badger/Insinkerstor warranty center, we had the spanner wrenches, to open the case, to replace the parts. Not my first install, with a garbage disposal, and I spaced the plug. Of course I was very sick at the time. And I have been a Plummer for 67 years.

I'm a self taught maintenance professional and the first time I replaced a garbage disposal was, of course, in an emergency situation. Didn't remove the plug and ended up throwing away three dishwashers before figuring it out lol.

Pull the dish washer hose off take a flat head stick it in hit the top corner so the plug is broke free but doesnt fall out reach in the disposal and grab it and pull it off. I get in a rush and always forget to knock it out till the very end when im going through the check list in my head
