Today's Catholic Mass Gospel and Reflection for October 14, 2024 - Luke 11:29-32

Embracing the Sign of Jonah

Monday of the Twenty-eighth Week in Ordinary Time
Lectionary: 467

Alleluia: PS 95:8
R. Alleluia, alleluia.
If today you hear his voice,
harden not your hearts.
R. Alleluia, alleluia.

Gospel: Luke 11:29-32
While still more people gathered in the crowd, Jesus said to them, “This generation is a wicked generation: it seeks a sign. But no sign will be given to it, except the sign of the prophet Jonah. For just as Jonah was a sign to the Ninevites, so also will the Son of man be to this generation. The queen of the South will rise up, at the judgment, with the men of this generation, and she will condemn them. For she came from the ends of the earth to hear the wisdom of Solomon. And behold, more than Solomon is here. The men of Nineveh will rise up, at the judgment, with this generation, and they will condemn it. For at the preaching of Jonah, they repented. And behold, more than Jonah is here.

Monday, October 14, 2024 - A moment with GOD through HIS WORD.

Reflection: How can you better align your daily choices with the selfless love and sacrifice that Jesus demonstrated in His life?

Prayer: My perfect Lord, every decision You made in life was made out of love and was in accord with the perfect will of the Father. Give me the grace I need to make every decision in life in imitation of Your perfect example. May my life imitate You as You laid down Your life for others. I choose You and Your glorious sacrificial life as the sign by which I am directed in life. Jesus, I trust in You.

Amen. What an inspirational message! "Give me the grace I need to make every decision in life in imitation of Your perfect example." This is the true meaning of discipleship with our Lord. The problem that arises in our life is that to do so, we need to set aside in our life the pride, ego, and selfishness we have in the flesh! I wonder how many of us could envision a world without "death or sorrow or crying or pain"? This is the promise in Revelation 21:4. The problem here is that we have chosen to " disconnect " ourselves from what is required to attain it. The selfless sacrifice that Jesus subjected Himself to does not carry the weight in our lives to the attainment of such grace. Maybe that is why in Revelations 19:11:16 we see Jesus return to this world to the Kingdom of God. As a believer, I recognize the power of God and His omnipotence over this world. We are told the inevitable end that will come to those who have chosen to stray from the reality of Gods word to us. Yes, it is difficult to walk away from a life of self service and put yourself in a humblness of love and sacrifice to others. But it is also a necessity if we are going to serve our Lord in a manner keeping with our faith. It is our faith, and the trust we develop in it, that will allow us to attain eternal life. Jesus Christ illustrated for us the manner in which we should choose to live, not a life of self indulgence, but rather a life of peaceful coexistence. While His life was free of sin, His sacrifice brought to us redemption for ours! So I pose this question, is a realignment of your life possible, given the ultimate choice that awaits you for your soul? It is a choice we will all be faced with eventually. It is a choice only we can make for ourselves. One way is the uncertainty of the flesh, the other has an assurance, Christ said, "I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me." 🙏💖🕊🕊🕊🕊
