What is Wernicke Korsakoff Syndrome? Wernicke-Korsakoff syndrome is a rare neurological condition that causes degeneration of brain cells, or neuronal atrophy. It is caused by thiamine, or vitamin B1, deficiency.

I currently live with this as I was diagnosed just over a year and a half ago. I am one of the very small population who didn’t have it due to drinking. Rather I had cyclic vomiting syndrome. Thank you so much for your clear and concise explanation. I will definitely be checking back in when I need to remember the more scientific explanation of my memory loss and why I had to learn how to walk/use my hands all over again. My daughter who was diagnosed with this when she was 26 years old. Shes now 28. She had anorexia when she was in high school which caused the damage from the lack of vitamins etc then. She had a nasty nasty divorce and custody battle. To the extreme where she began drinking. And she became a severe alcoholic in a matter of a few months. In less than 6 months of drinking she was diagnosed. her left eye turned completely inward. She didn't even know who the President.😢was and she was sober then. She couldn't walk a straight line again sober. If her eye doctor hadn't seen the seriousness of it and pressured her then family Doctor to see her she would have died. The hospital said she was within 2 days from death by the time she was admitted. Now keep in mind all this happened in LESS THAN 6 MONTHS TO A GIRL WHO HARDLY EVER DRANK TIL THE LAST 6 MONTHS. Her memory isn't back to what it was.

I have this disease but not an alcoholic. Had two gastric bypass sugerys. Then couldn't eat enough to stay in my body and absorb the vitamins and minerals from foods. Constant dumping syndrom after eating small amouts of food.

I was shocked that my multi-vitamin does not include vitamin B1. Luckily, I drink milk.. eat food etc..

I had wernicke's due to extreme vomiting during pregnancy which resulted in a miscarriage..Dont remember about 10 days of my life which I had spend in ICU...Its been 8 years but still my movements are not like before.

Hello I've got a doubt on this.. Does Wernicke Korsakoff syndrome only occur through chronic alcoholism induced Vit B1 deficiency or can it also occur where there is physiological malabsorbtion of Vit B1? Great work guyss

Can symptoms like of confabulatio n, altered mental status, apathy, eye changes, long and short term memory loss be reversed if treated without delay? I had a binge drinking night 1 and a half month ..i felt Wernicke's encephalopathy symptoms the same night or tge next day as I remember...however the problem is 2 weeks ago i started having confabulation.... More than 2 weeks ago.. i felt apathy... Now i still have apathy and confabulation... Sometimes my mental status feels altered.. and my body seems it changes and feels strange/weird.... All that is because I didnt treat this condition well... Poorly treatment without consistency with thiamine... What should i do?? Probably go to a doctor ASAP... But due to this delay... Do I still need IV thiamine? Or only oral thiamine? Most important question i have, do i have a chance to be treated and symptoms reversed? The bigger problems is memory loss... Im lossing memories long term and short... I can feel that and aware of it... Can memory loss be reversed and my memories and personality to come back?
