Shows how dumb America has become. They don't know how to protect their IT Infrastructure from this? Not like it's a new thing.
These kinds of stories make me wonder about America's future.
I have run different Systems over the years, and have not had one ransomware attack ever infect me. Takes a lot of work, but it can be done, the system can be secured in the 'proper way'.
My opinion is the CIO should be fired immediately, and no way should they pay 6 million!
Why you should have a 'comprehensive' system backup!
I just think Americans are either too dumb or too lazy for the job, sorry if I sound 'negative'.
At least this CNET guy knows what he's talking about:
Using 2 factor is a good step, as he says. I've used it a long time now, can't imagine not using it, along with end-to-end encryption, etc. On some things, I even use 3 factor, believe it or not (I'm pretty paranoid about this). Mainly stuff involving money or crypto, stuff like that.

So anyone reading this, at least get Google 2 factor on your phone as a '2nd layer' of security, especially if it involves money or important stuff, or get a USB key providing it-like yubikey.
