At times, I’d wondered, when would the flute and voice end, it was like I couldn’t differentiate one instrument from the other, the blending of the two were phenomenal, the way she’d leave a note was as if the flute and the voice shared the same passaggio. Exquisite!

My high school Spanish teacher had a whole collection of Yuma Sumac LP’s. Everyone once in awhile she’d take time out of the class and play them for a treat. We were a mostly unappreciative audience, but now I recognize what an amazing talent she was. Yma Sumac, that is, and also my teacher for putting up with us.

What I love about these old performances (among many things) is how genuine they feel, now everything is about the challenge and who's the best, not saying there was no competitive attitude before it's just that on top of everything they seem to be enjoying so much the performance that they made the techniques and difficulty look effortless (which obviously isn't the case).

This shows that the voice is an instrument like any other. It needs to be tuned, warmed up, practiced, stretched, and taken care of. Yma should be considered a master of her instrument. She was the best, and is in the same company as Jimi Hendrix, Rachmaninov, Mozart, Prince, and all the other masters. Yma Sumac is in a league of her own!
