I made this mistake at my job i believe this was the reason I did not get promoted i outshined my boss naturally in many ways from just being me. My looks alone stirred insecurity in her so my personality was the icing on the cake she always treated me like an enemy.

This is very sad, but true! Highly frustrating if working for an incompetent boss. Trick is to find a smart boss that you can learn from & therefore hard to outshine

Ive experienced this mostly in school as a child. I thought that by presenting additional information or helping my teachers fix errors they made would give me brownie points in their eyes, but evidently it just made them insecure and so i became more and more ostracized by them.

At some point one must say "...yes sir..." and do what is commanded. I learned this during my time in The United States Navy.

Man it sucks to have to live like this. Even in the Bible, David out-shined Saul, and Saul tried to kill him.

Unfortunately I experienced this law and had to change jobs due to the fear of being fired and having my hard word and reputation damaged. "Never out shine your authority", a lesson I have learned at a young age.

This makes me feel sick, because it’s so true! I’ve experienced it myself and it totally sucks because I don’t want to be put in a box where I can not express my natural self!

I was waiting for someone to break down each of the laws. I can sometimes have trouble understanding some... Thanks!

Wow just WOW! Thank you so much for this, it fuckin' perfect! Now, my girlfriend had quite an experience when she (unknowingly) disobeyed this law. She was employed in vegetarian restaurant as a cook. She has got some mad skills in cooking, she went vegan many years ago, I didn't (bacon is bacon), but her recipes are so damn good that I enjoy them even without meat. Well that was the problem in the restaurant, she improved the menu and customers were coming back all the time. After a month or so the owner fired her for no reason (3 months trial period). Now I understand why :D

BTW I just want to tell you. I wish you guys would have been around when I was growing up. You have opened my eyes, to a new world. My parents where never around when I was growing up. If I would have this tool, my life would be different. Thank You. I really, really appreciate it Illarcetus.

This pisses me off. it shows how hard work and honesty don't pay off in a logical way. People are so insecure and petty.

Thanks for making these videos. I am writing this comment in 2021 June, so you have made all the 48 laws and I am learning one law a day using your videos because I can't afford the book. I am a thirteen years old boy from Myanmar.

Thank you so much.

I experienced the the negative aspect of this law in a very detrimental way. I joined a very reputable organization as a consultant and my boss happened to be also new to the organization. She had joined less than a year prior to my arrival. I came in to the job with my guns blazing and was quickly getting noticed by leadership and my bosses superiors. My name was being brought up in leadership meetings where my boss was present. Finally she had a one on one meeting with me where sbe shared what she has been noticing and hearing about me and she advised me to slow down. I was confused I thought that I she would view me as an asset but I was clearly a threat to her and she then began her campaign to bring me down and make my life miserable. I learned in a very hard way that it is never wise to outshine you boss.

Louis XIV once asked one of his courtiers, when his wife would give birth to their child. The courtier, in awe of their majesty, responded "whenever Sire wanted her to". The king was delighted. Give your boss a chance to shine, they'll love you for it. Hope you guys find the video resourceful!

Law #1 Never Outshine the Master
Always make those above you feel comfortably superior. In your desire to please or impress them, do not go too far in displaying your talents or you might accomplish the opposite, inspire fear and insecurity. Make your masters apper more brilliant than they are and you will attain the heights of power.
Lessons:
Present your ideas in a way that they echo your bosses thoughts
Act less smarter than your boss(not dumber)
Do not take your postion at work or in life for granted
Always make sure to make it seem like you want to seek the superior's expertise and advice

Excellent. Done in a way that is quick, but gets the point across so very well. Your accent also oddly keeps my attention as I can't anticipate the way you will pronounce the next word. It captured me. I am a fan!

I mess this one up a lot. I try to do the best I can in any job I do. I never could figure out how to balance do my best without outshining. I never wanted to shrink either. I work for myself now which has helped a lot.

A boss is still a boss, especially if he is appointed by an owner of a company. I've learned that it doesn't matter if you can do a better job than them. They are the ones with the athority to hire or fire you. If you outshine them, all they have to do is get you out of the way. But if you acknowledge that they have qualities that you have yet to attain, whatever it was that put them in the position their in, then they are more willing to help you along. They look at themselves as mentors. And you may actually find that you don't know everything.
