Toronto resident in wheelchair calls on TTC to be more aware after streetcar passed him twice
Комментарии
This happened so me but with a taxi, once he saw my wheelchair he blantly refused to take me. The taxi behind him took me and he said that I should make a complaint to the company, which I did, and it went to court. I won my case 😊

I cannot wrap my head around this kind of behavior. What kind of a sad soul do you have to be to just ignore someone like that?!

I have chronic pain/fatigue, and I cannot tell you how many times I was sitting at the stop, saw the bus/streetcar coming, got up and limped to the door at my top speed, and the driver doesn't even open the door for me and drives off. Sometimes I bang on the door, and the driver lets me on but tells me off for doing so, as if they weren't about to drive off without me.

This shit happens constantly. My aunty is a power wheelchair user, bus drivers sometimes can't be bothered to put the ramp down and just drive past her. It got so bad at one point she would have to ask people going past to flag the bus down for her as if there were other people at the stop, the bus would stop and let her on.

That's so frustrating.
A lot of drivers don't seem to be aware of how to engage with assistive device users.
When I was first using TTC's FOS program, I was dropped off at a bus stop, and the bus was several cars behind on a red light. I was waiting at the stop when the light turned and the bus just passed me by. This made me think that maybe I was in the wrong place. The next bus driver arrived and didn't put down his ramp, so I tried to speak to him from the curb. He yelled to me that he couldn't hear me bc I was masked, and I told him I actually thought it's because I'm too far away without the ramp. Only then did he put it down, after which I got on and asked if I was supposed to use that bus. He told me no, I got off, and then called customer service. They told me I WAS supposed to get on, and 40 minutes later, I was finally on a bus... where no one was willing to give up their seat.🤦🏽♀️🤷🏽♀️

Damn, I can imagine how awful it must have felt to be so brazenly ignored like that. We need to build an inclusive future ❤

I'd wait and see where does that report goes. If they handle it properly, then it's one asshole. If TTC doesn't do anything, then yeah, it's systemic.

I have been kicked off of the only (accessible) bus route in my town because of my wheelchair. The route is accessible the driver just doesn't want to take the litteral 1.5 minutes to load me, I can clip in myself! So I just can't ride the bus, that I rode for over a year before my disability.

I'm so sorry. I'm glad it was reported but it shouldn't have happened in the first place. I hope your day has gotten better and you were able to get where you needed to go.

That driver probably doesn’t need to have that job anymore. They probably already are tired of it. And they need to accommodate everyone or just not have a job.

I'm glad it was reported. Not cool at all - the TTC can be a pain even without issues like that. Thinking of you - definitely don't miss living in TO (though sometimes I miss having public transit at all lol)

So sorry Spencer, that is horrible. I hope the rest of your day went much better. ❤

I've never heard the term ableism before but that was downright discrimination.
