If I had to listen to one jazz trumpet player for the rest of my life... Freddie.

Freddie was a titan! He was a musical intuitive that was channeling from higher realms and this account by the musicians that worked with him. His groove, the way he played in the pocket, unmatched. Besides his musical genius, he was charismatic and iconic. I met many of the jazz masters in my life but when I was standing next to Freddie in a small jazz club, I was speechless. Couldn’t even get out a hello

Lastly and this will sound weird, Freddie in modern times is completely underrated. Of course those who know, know. Millions saw him play, Grammy awards, classic tunes in the real book, but unlike Miles, Chet Baker, Coltrane who have books about them, movies, interviews, nobody wrote shit about Freddie. Even Max, what’s his name, the owner of Village Vanguard said that Freddie would often substitute for Miles when Miles was sick and under his breath he said, and he often sounded better than Miles. Even Brecker gets more post mortem commentary than Freddie. There hasn’t been a trumpet player before or after, even sax players that was a master of melodic invention, with all the other qualities mentioned all in one. And I don’t think I overstate the case. Wynton was heralded as the next coming. Not even close to Freddie in most departments other than a highly competent trumpet player who spoke like a historian. Media fawned over him
