Lakitu may not be a very popular character but he has been in every single Mario Kart game making sure you make it to the finish line. He'll be there right at the start of the race letting players know when to go, he'll rescue you if you fall, let you know if you're going the wrong way, passing a lap and be there when you finish the race. The reason he picks you up instantly in Mk8 is because throughout Mario kart history, players have exploited lakitu getting confused and placing you way ahead of where you fell off.
