In response to demand and encouraged by the success of their previous record "ECHOES OF STITHIANS", the Choirs again join forces to present this selection of Sankey Hymns. Gospel Hymns came into world prominence in the 1870's with the American Evangelist Dr. Moody and his musical colleague Ira D. Sankey. Moody—contrary to common belief—did not himself write the words of any hymns. " Sankey wrote and composed many, but he is more of a compiler than a composer and his collection of 1,200 Sacred Songs and Solos are known and sung throughout the world. Nowhere are they more popular, however, than in the West Country, and Cornwall in particular. So it is fitting that a combined choir from the quiet and peace-ful village of Stithians should make this presentation. Many still remember the days at the turn of the century—prior to television and wireless—when on a Sunday even-ing Methodist and Anglican families alike gathered together in their humble home-steads around the harmonium or organ (or indeed the piano in a few well-to-do houses) to find real enjoyment as they raised their voices in community singing. Sankey Hymns would be certain to top the list. We are thankful that something of that happy family spirit still continues, for, in spite of many new houses and bungalows, the village has kept much of its character. Some descendants of the half-dozen or so major families who used to constitute the entire village still reside here, and have been added to by an influx of newcomers—many of whom have been quick to enter into the communal spirit of village life. The 'wind of change' has not completely passed us by. There is more leisure, more modern homes, motor cars, and television sets. We are glad that, in spite of these things, the villagers have retained their love of music-making. This was proved by the healthy state of our Silver Band under Edgar Floyd, and the two village Choirs. The male choir (formed in 1947) and the ladies choir (formed in 1966) proudly present this selection of Sankey Hymns—conscious that in a rapidly changing world the fundamental needs of society have not altered. We hope our listeners will not only enjoy the catchy tunes with their lively and vital rhythms but may also find joy and comfort in the unchanging truths concealed in the words, as they SING WITH SANKEY. --Sydney Bowden
