Note:
Slip of the tongue or slip of the Brain, or both 🤣. So correction. Event is the Tour of Slovenia, not Slovakia.

Tadej: "F*ck these tires!"
Waynos: It's the brakes.

if you watched the race live it was clear it had nothing to do with brakes. his pirelli tires were shit, he literally yelled quite clearly as much on camera to his teammate who was also struggling. I'll bet anything he rides unbranded Continentals in the Tour.

I feel the bike industry has decided to go all in disk brakes for road bikes. They’re now too embarrassed to revert back to rim brakes on this failed experiment.

I ride both clincher and disks and I have not found a problem with brake modulation or lock up. However I'm 85 kgs. I'm thinking lousy road conditions was the factor in this instance.

I don't know if i believe it was the disc brake system at fault, but more that some tyres are better on greasy surfaces which this downhill claimed to be.

It’s not the brakes, it’s the tires… he just got new Pirelli’s. He used same exact disc brakes last year.
He use to to ride tubulars at supper high pressure which he is probably trying to replicate that feeling on tubeless tires. Pirelli have to be used with not much more than 72-75 psi for top performance with tubeless setup.

Tyre compound, tyre pressure, road surface, brake design, disc material, pad compound, setup, frame/fork stiffness, and rider all play a part during braking. It's impossible to point the finger at one item as the route cause. That is speculation not science or engineering.

Tyres can play up I've had that experience years ago with a set of slicks on a MTB commuter. From memory the tyres were panaracers. Terrible in the wet lost the back a few times with old cantilever brakes. If the tyres Pog is using are tubeless maybe theres some issues with pressures.

I thought disk brakes are so much better in the rain than rim brakes 😉? But I guess this time it was the tires.

Mainly a tyre issue by the look of it. Wet road and pirelli slicks. Not a good mix.

I used them 1 season on my motorbike great in the dry and heat but in the wet they used to let go unpredictably. Made me lose confidence in the corners massively.

I was told they had more silica in the compound than the Michelin and continental tyres. Don't know if that is true but never used them again. Same with car tyres, never saw a pirelli tyre destroy themselves so quickly as any other including budget tyres. I wouldn't use them on my car either.

So how many time did we see as soon as it rained Sky riders all coming off it it rained with rim brakes.

LOL, wet conditions, technical gradient descent so weight distribution bias is way over the front but it's the tires fault the rear wheel locks up.

It couldn't possibly be wrong tire pressure, or applying the rear brake too early, or finding the greasy patch on the road, or just be his own fault, oh no, it's the tires fault.

It's very difficult in an emergency situation to override reflex and just use one finger on the brakes. Survival instincts kick in and make you want to grab a whole handful of lever. This would have to be taken into account. The brain is what it is.

Cyclist:” these tires are awful, no traction” Waynos:” the damn disc brakes again!”

Must be why he was swearing how shit his tires were. Nothing to do with brakes.

How about looking to the fact that the team is using a different tyre and compound? I recently switched from Continental to Enve. Big difference in grip and cornering control. Same bike, same brakes, but I was finding myself all over the road until I adjusted to the uniqueness of the tread and tire. Even switching from tubed to tubeless has influence. Pagacar has been riding on discs long enough to have learned how to control them as well. Took me about a month to learn how to descend at high speeds (70 kph) with them.

Have you watched GCN Techs ' The Ultimate Bike Truck Tour' ? Quite interesting to see inside the truck but the bike mechanic has another little dig at disk brakes from his point of view.

Actually ride a disc bike before blaming it. The modulation is excellent in all conditions. It feels different than rim because the system is different. And the confident it gives you braking from 60, 70, 80, and pro speed 90+ is unmatched by rim bikes. It's always the same pull the same grab it doesn't change its feed back mid way like some rim brake does as the rubber pad heat up or catches the rim more/ less as the pad/caliper deform/ flex . It's always the same feel with disc brakes and they fade gradually and predictably.

The problem could be with the disk (Yes.)
