"climb back on your float and be waiting for you." that is funny. Another way is to lay  two  14" 2x4s 15" apart and parallel. Then screw another 2x4 across the top perpendicular and in the middle of the bottom two. Flip it upside down and screw some wire mesh across the bottom and this is where the traps will lay. The top 2x4 you can put a screw in the 2x4 and push a carrot onto it. That is about the cheapest float you can make. You can also anchor it with some really cheap metal dog chain (rat proof). Good idea you have too, though.
