The 2022 Nobel Prize in Physics has been awarded to Alain Aspect, John F. Clauser and Anton Zeilinger discovered that particles known as photons can be linked, or "entangled" with each other even when they are separated by large distances.

In the 1960s, John Stewart Bell developed the mathematical inequality which states that if there are hidden variables in particles, the correlation between the results of a large number of measurements will never exceed a certain value. However, quantum mechanics predicts that a certain type of experiment will violate Bell's inequality, thus resulting in a stronger correlation than would otherwise be possible.

John Clauser developed John Bell’s ideas, leading to a practical experiment.
When some loopholes remained in Clauser’s experiment, Alain Aspect developed a setup that closed an important loophole. He was able to switch the measurement settings after an entangled pair had left its source.Anton Zeilinger’s research group demonstrated a phenomenon called quantum teleportation, which makes it possible to move a quantum state from one particle to one at a distance.

The results have made way for new technology based on quantum information. Their research might allow the utilization of properties of individual particle systems which will help in constructing quantum computers, build quantum networks and encrypted communication. The 2021 Physics Prize was jointly awarded to Syukuro Manabe, Giorgio Parisi and Klaus Hasselmann for "for groundbreaking contributions to our understanding of complex physical systems".

Alain Aspect visited the flat I shared with Jack Sarfatti in 1983. He also came to the Caffe Trieste to meet our roundtable group of physics afficionados. John Clauser also visited. They were already deeply engaged in work on Bell's Inequalities. I will never forget that on the day I left San Francisco for Norway, October 25, 2022, Aspect, Clauser and Zeilinger shared their Nobel Prizes. We must also remember physicist Stuart Jay Freefman who passed away beforehand. They were working on the theoretical proposal of Clauser, Horne, Shimony and Holt.
