Mitsero mine was a copper mine that operated between 1953 and 1967. The lake is called Kokkinopezoula, meaning acid lake. Apparently the minerals and ore from the mining turned the water red and any animals that drink from the water die. there is no vegetation around the shore and also where the water evaporates it leaves a yellow salt debris. during the winter the lake is a more
light red than dark red due to the water dispersing the sulfuric acid in the water.
