I would love to listen to your thoughts regarding font pairing, how to choose a complimentary font after selecting your primary font. Thank you.

Many Google Fonts are not made for free. Someone else paid for them, and also decided to make them available for free. A notable example is Fira Sans.

I've just this evening finished a client site with inter. I used bold for headlines and regular for text. But, at each size I changed the letter spacing. Pulling inter in like you did there makes it a much better font, but the same letter spacing doesn't work across all weights and sizes. You need to do a bit of work to get it right.

Would love to see a video about the difference between web safe and non-web safe fonts, different approaches to custom fonts etc. I have a sense for typography in my design software, but would like to know more about what can be implemented by a developer.

I just never understood how you can keep order in fonts. The more I have on my computer the more confusing it gets and then I keep choosing just couple of fonts I know.

If you wanna be a good product designer, then your opinions and preferences should be out the window. What matter is how you empathize with the people using your creations, and those people have their own biases and opinions about stuff. What we like doesnt matter if you want to be a good designer of products that people will actually use.

Few notes. I mostly agree with everything here. Quality fonts aren't rare from what everyone sees, since the largest companies of the world use expensive fonts. Everywhere you look, you'll see either helvetica, guardian, or something similar from large brands. Large brands are what is blasted everywhere. So there's nothing rare about it. However, visibility of a small business brand advertising is quite rare. They simply can't afford the amount of capital that fortune 500 companies can. Since visibility of a business advertising is rare, they can't invest into spending top dollar for licensing fonts. That's why Google Fonts are totally fine. A lot of companies funnel an obscene amount of capital into their brand identities. What do they gain for it? They use brand identity to cover up the fact that they have a terrible product to start with.

You only need to stretch out videos to 8 mins to get the mid-roll ad breaks now.

Google fonts are not all bad. It's just that the library is so big that it takes some time to find good fonts. However, you can get the most awkward font from there or dafont and turn it into a very good base for a brand. It all depends on how good the designer is with type setting.

Metrical kerning is customized by the typeface designer; optical is an algorithm in the design software, and it nearly always looks worse (as in your Inter example). A lot of free fonts are bad, but graphic design has very different needs than typesetting, which isn’t really discussed here. Expensive typefaces can be very hard to use well in book design.

This is like going into a Fish n Chip place and telling patrons that they're not exactly fine dinning. Well no shit Matt, we know wagyu tastes better, but we can't afford it.
