Writing one step equations from word problems- Math

The easiest way to write a one step equation is to
FIND THE SOLUTION FIRST, and THEN WRITE THE EQUATION.
1) Identify the numbers you are going to use from the word problem.
2) Identify the operation needed to find the answer/the solution.
3) Solve the problem (this is your SOLUTION). NOW WRITE THE EQUATION!
4) Start by writing your variable (let's use "x").
5) Then write the inverse operation of what you did to find the solution (opposite of step #2).
6) Then you fill in the number from the ORIGINAL problem in the equation.

Your SOLUTION should NEVER be included in your equation. That's what the VARIABLE took the place of in the equation.

Word Problem Whole Number Examples
1) Zac did 102 sit-ups at the end of the month. This was 6 times as many sit-ups as he was able to do at the beginning of the month. How many sit-ups was Zac able to do at the beginning of the month?

2) Drew's height is 17 inches less than Angela's height. Drew is 55 inches tall. Write and solve an equation to find Angela's height.
