It seems the police didn't really care to look into what the other kids had to say. The fact that someone flashed a light into their dorm's window a few days later is sketchy. I think a creep was roaming around, watching them and waiting until one of the kids was isolated in the dark to take him. That would explain why Guy was there one second and was gone the next, and why his body was never found nearby. The zipped up coat is an interesting detail though, I'm not sure what to think of it.

I live on the Canadian prairies, where our rivers ice up in October and do not thaw until April.
An acquaintance lost her brother while snowmobiling on a local river some years ago, he and his machine went through the ice before his buddies could assist him.

His body was not found for approx five years, after it washed up one spring kilometers from where he went in. We have individuals that fell in that time of year, never found.
My guess is Guy was filled wity youthful enthusiasm given the game, was attempting to sneak back with the flag, trying to find a route and fell into the river.

So thorough ! My question has been... what happened to the flag? It was reported he was hiding at the tree line behind a tree hiding the flag to keep it safe. If this is true, nothing was mentioned whether the flag was missing or accounted for. I thought at first it must be foul play because what boy would run off into the dark cold by himself? But if he had the flag, it makes sense that he got excited and decided to take it further.

Even if animals didn't kill Guy, they may have disturbed or scattered any remains, making it impossible to locate him.

My oldest son is 11 and I cannot imagine not knowing where he is at all times. My heart really goes out to that family and to that little boy. Hopefully one day that family will get some closure at the very least.

Just FYI, the S's in Des Moines are both silent, just as they are in Illinois. Sorry. but I live just an hour and a half southeast of Cedar Rapids, IA, in Illinois. However, I wasn't born until 1977, so I was unaware of this case.
This case is as absolutely heartbreaking as all cases involving missing children are.
